As a new pool owner, I’ve quickly learned that keeping your pool in tip-top shape is a year-round commitment. Sure, the water temperatures may be chilly, the UV rays low, and your pool may not see much bather load during the winter months. But your pump, filter, heater, and other critical equipment are still functional and need to be watched closely. The last thing I want is to find my pool surfaces and equipment damaged and unusable when it’s finally time to open up for the summer season.
Keeping Up with Water Chemistry
One of the most crucial aspects of off-season pool care is managing your water chemistry. I know it may not seem as demanding during the winter, but maintaining the proper pH, alkalinity, cyanuric acid, and calcium hardness levels is essential to protecting your pool investment. If these parameters are out of whack for an extended period, it can wreak havoc on your equipment and pool surfaces.
I try to test and balance the water chemistry weekly at a minimum. For my spa, I even check it every 2-3 days to stay on top of things. And don’t forget to use an algaecide to knock out any existing algae and prevent new blooms from taking over. Even though the sanitizer levels can be reduced a bit during the winter, you still need to maintain the proper chemical balance.
Keeping Debris at Bay
Just because your pool is covered and not in use, doesn’t mean dirt, pollen, and other contaminants can’t still find their way in. That’s why I make it a point to regularly check and clean the filter, doing backwashes as needed per the manufacturer’s recommendations. I also stay on top of emptying the skimmer baskets, pump baskets, floor cleaner containers, and cleaner bags. This helps keep my water and equipment running smoothly, and makes my life a lot easier come spring.
Protecting Against Freezing
One of my biggest concerns during the winter is making sure my pool equipment and plumbing don’t freeze up. I’ve heard too many horror stories about burst pipes and ruined pumps from the extreme cold. That’s why I’m constantly monitoring my freeze guard to ensure my pool equipment has proper circulation whenever temperatures start to plummet.
If you live in a region that experiences freezing temps, it’s crucial to keep that pump running 24/7 when it’s below 32°F. Even if your pump has an automatic freeze guard sensor, I’d still recommend running it continuously until the mercury rises back above that threshold. Circulating water is less likely to freeze than stagnant water, so keeping everything moving is key.
Cleaning and Maintaining Surfaces
While I may not be swimming laps in the winter, I still make sure to stay on top of brushing, vacuuming, and skimming my pool surfaces on a weekly basis. This prevents algae growth and keeps things looking their best for when it’s time to reopen. I pay extra attention to those hard-to-reach areas behind the ladders, steps, and corners – making sure no organic debris gets a chance to take hold.
And of course, I keep a close eye on my pool’s water level, making sure it’s at the right height to protect my pump and keep everything primed. The ideal level can vary depending on your climate, but in my neck of the woods, about 4-6 inches below the skimmer seems to be the sweet spot during the winter months.
Prepping for Spring Reopening
When it comes time to open my pool back up in the spring, I know I’ll be glad I took the time for these weekly winter maintenance tasks. Not only will it save me from dealing with a big, green mess, but it’ll also help me avoid costly repairs or replacements to my equipment.
